Provide your crew with the skills and knowledge that they need to work safely on every dig. Trench and excavation safety training builds the knowledge to assess the soil, put the right protection in place and work confidently as the excavation goes on. It's made for construction teams and matched to the conditions they meet on site.
Trenching and Excavation Safety Training
What You'll Learn
Our trenching and excavation safety training covers the knowledge and safe habits your workers need to inspect and safely work in and around excavations. We use real worksite photos of safe and unsafe set-ups, so the differences are easy to recognize. We'll cover:
Trench vs Excavation
A trench and an excavation aren't the same thing, and the difference changes what the rules require. We'll cover what sets them apart and the point at which the job needs a competent person involved.
Before You Break Ground
A lot of the risk is settled before a shovel goes in. This covers the checks and precautions that come first, so hazards get handled up front rather than found halfway down.
Soil Types and Protective Systems
Soil classification drives which protective system a dig needs. We'll cover the main soil types alongside the systems that suit each, such as sloping, benching, shoring and shielding.

What Safety Training is Required?
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Under OSHA's excavation standard, 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P - Excavations, employers must ensure workers can recognize and avoid that unsafe conditions that come with trench and excavation work.
No, not on its own. This is general awareness training, so it covers what a competent person is and when one is required, but it doesn't make an attendee the designated competent person. OSHA sets separate requirements for that role, which include more in-depth training requirements.
Workers are trained when they're hired or assigned to trench and excavation work, and annual refreshers are recommended to keep skills current.
Our general awareness trainings typically last 20-30 minutes per topic. For a session on various safety topics, training can be anywhere from 2 to 8 hours depending on the number of workplace hazards and topics covered.
Competent person trenching training can last up to 8 hours.
OSHA recognizes online training, and completion is documented automatically for your records. Additional hands-on or more thorough training may be necessary depending on your role and responsibilities.
