What Safety Training is Required?
Frequently Asked Questions
HAZWOPER stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. The standard was established to protect employees that are involved with hazardous waste operations, emergency response, and clean-up activities involving hazardous substances.
It depends on each person's responsibilities and exposure level, since training requirements are heavily based on job roles and responsibilities. Workers routinely entering hazardous waste sites or performing cleanup generally need the 40-hour course. Those with limited exposure or occasional site duties generally need the 24-hour course, and anyone who has already trained needs the 8-hour refresher every 12 months. We can help you match people to the right course.
Yes. OSHA requires HAZWOPER training under 29 CFR 1910.120, with a construction counterpart at 29 CFR 1926.65, for employees exposed to hazardous substances during cleanup, corrective action, operations at treatment and disposal facilities, or emergency response.
Workers who have completed the 24-hour or 40-hour course must take an 8-hour refresher every year. The refresher training revisits core practices and covers new hazards, procedures, and regulations relevant to their work.
The 40-hour course is for workers routinely entering hazardous waste sites or performing hazardous substance cleanup. The 24-hour course is for workers with limited exposure or occasional site duties, such as monitoring or surveying. Choosing the right level up front avoids retraining later.
