The Key to Getting the Big Jobs
As a small business owner, I’m sure you’ve thought to yourself “how can I get bigger jobs?” You may have brainstormed about different marketing tactics to promote your company or come up with other ways to expand your clientele, but you may be missing an important key to winning those big jobs that you’re bidding on – safety. If you’re ignoring your company’s safety program, you might as well toss your hopes of winning the big jobs aside.
Start Creating a Safety Culture
You care about your employees and never want to be in the position that many face far too often – delivering a message to a next-of-kin that their loved one will not be coming home, especially when you know that the accident could have been prevented. What is the easy thing to do to avoid this dismal situation? Show your employees you care by taking safety seriously. Following OSHA’s requirements is a great starting point (after all, it is the law)!
Who’s Responsible for Safety on the Job?
If you’re serious about winning the big jobs, you need to start thinking like a large general contractor. General contractors not only have a legal duty to ensure safety, they have ethical and financial responsibilities as well. Did you know that you can be fined because of another subs’ wrongdoings? With OSHA’s Multi Employer Worksite Citation Policy, general contractors around the country are looking to hire subs that can get the job done safely, since the GC can also be cited as the controlling employer.
The general contractor prequalification process looks at the following telltale signs of a safe company:
- A solid safety & health program that incorporates custom written safety programs and training on the applicable OSHA standards
- A good safety record (injury & illness rates at or below industry average)
- A clean or minimal occupational safety and health inspection history
- A safe company may not have the lowest bid, but most general contractors know, as the old saying goes, “pay a little now, save a lot later”.
