The materials on this page are for trained forklift trainers to use when providing i-house forklift operator certifications. Each step outlines what needs to be completed, by the trainer and trainee, to ensure that the training is conducted properly and complies with OSHA's 1910.178 standard.
Upon completing this course, attendees will be trained in safely operating a forklift, working safely around equipment, taking responsibility for the equipment, and developing the habits necessary to maintain a safe operating environment. The training includes but is not limited to:

What to do: Conduct a classroom-style training. This portion of the training is lecture-based instruction, meant to foster discussion, while utilizing the PowerPoint presentation & videos. Review forklift types, training requirements, inspection checklists, and the group exercise.
What to do: Ensure the operator has already received hands-on-training and is familiar with operating the equipment before doing a practical exam. Once ready, set up a mock course that allows the trainer to demonstrate safe, proper operation. Have the operator complete practical exercises on the equipment, using this time to evaluate their ability to operate the truck safely and competently, not to teach basic driving skills.
What to do: Operators who have completed the classroom and practical instruction portions must now be evaluated with both written and hands-on exams (written proficiency & hands-on proficiency tests). Upon successful completion of everything, employees can be provided with a operator certification card.
**Employees must pass both of the written and hands-on portions of the assessment to receive an operator certification card.
What to do: Once employees have been trained as powered industrial truck operators, the trainer will create and issue operator certification cards.
