Protect your employees from injuries and illnesses related to chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other work-related hazards by providing the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training.

OSHA’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Standard Requirements

Personal Protective Equipment, commonly referred to as PPE, is equipment that is worn to protect against and minimize exposures to workplace hazards that can result in injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from exposure to chemical, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards. PPE may include items such as gloves, safety glasses, protective shoes or boots, earplugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, face shields, or fall arrest equipment.

Protective equipment needs to be provided, used, and maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions About Personal Protective Equipment

Does OSHA’s PPE standard apply to all businesses?

OSHA’s Personal Protective Equipment requirements will apply to different businesses in differing ways. Workers will need to wear certain PPE if they’re in the medical field, construction, general industry, maritime, or oil and gas. If employees are not exposed to contact with any chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other serious workplace hazards, then they would not need to wear PPE. It is best to consult with safety professionals, such as Lancaster Safety, to determine what PPE is required.

How does an employer determine what PPE is needed?

A hazard assessment needs to be conducted by either the employer or a third party, like Lancaster Safety, in order to determine what PPE is needed for which employees.

What OSHA training is required for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?

Once the PPE requirements are made, employees need to be able to do the following:

  • Know when PPE is needed to be worn;
  • Understand what type of PPE is necessary;
  • Wear PPE properly (don, doff, and adjust)
  • Realize the limitations of the PPE;
  • Be able to maintain and care for PPE;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the training and the ability to use PPE properly, before being allowed to perform work requiring the use of PPE.

Are there any ongoing PPE updates that need to be made?

After a hazard assessment and employee safety training have been completed, ongoing maintenance and review will still be needed. For example, retraining and hazard assessments should be conducted when the work environment changes (new jobsite or facility), the type of work being performed is altered, or when an employee displays inadequacies in their knowledge of safe training practices.
