What Is Silica?

Silica: a mineral that naturally occurs in crystalline or non-crystalline form. The most abundant crystalline form is α-quartz, which is the most common mineral on earth’s continents. It is found in sand, sandstone, shale and granite. So, if you’re doing any drilling, crushing, cutting, chipping, breaking, sawing or polishing materials containing crystalline silica, you may be exposed to respirable dust. These dust particles are too small to see, but can penetrate to the deepest part of the human lung when inhaled. This is why we say, if it’s silica dust, it’s not JUST dust! It can be extremely harmful.

Why Silica Safety Training?

Wearing proper PPE is vital for protecting workers from the severe health risks associated with respirable crystalline silica. By understanding the sources of exposure, adhering to regulations, implementing control measures, and ensuring ongoing education and training, both employers and workers can significantly reduce the risks associated with silica dust.
