What Exactly is Asphalt?
Asphalt is a black, sticky material which is produced using crude oil along with a mix of chemicals, rock, and sand. It has many applications and uses to include roofing, waterproofing, paving, and glues. Asphalt is blended or “cut” with solvents such as naphtha, toluene, xylene, and other chemicals which act as binders, hardening, and bonding agents.
Why Hot Asphalt Safety Training?
When working with asphalt, it’s crucial to prioritize personal protective equipment (PPE). Asphalt can reach temperatures above 300°F (150°C), it’s important to avoid direct contact with the material. The chemical make-up of asphalt causes toxic fumes that can lead to lung disease and damage to the nervous system, so it is important to wear the proper respiratory protection.
