What is HAZCOM?
OSHA’s Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) standard focuses on keeping employees safe from harmful chemicals. OSHA adopted a Globalized Harmonization Standard (GHS) that requires all employers with hazardous chemicals in their workplaces to have labels and safety data sheets for their exposed workers and train them to handle the chemicals appropriately.
OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard Requirements
Most of us use chemicals every day to do our jobs, but they can be hazardous, and the risk of injury or incidents involved with the use of chemicals can be increased if you aren’t aware of what the hazards are. Knowing and understanding elements of the hazard communication standard are critical to keeping you safe when dealing with chemicals in the workplace/jobsites and as an employee, you have the right to know about the chemicals in your specific workplace/jobsites
Employers are Required to Provide:
- Chemical labels on all hazardous chemicals
- Safety Data Sheets (SDS, formerly referred to as MSDS) for all hazardous chemicals
- Train employees on how to handle chemicals safely
