California’s Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Requirements

California updated and expanded its requirements of employers to adequately train their employees to handle and prevent sexual harassment in the workplace.

Any employer with five or more employees will have to provide “classroom or other effective interactive training and education regarding sexual harassment to their employees” within six months of their assumption of a position. This needs to be re-taken every two years thereafter. Training duration differs based on supervisory status:

  • Supervisory employees receive at least two hours of training
  • Non-supervisory employees receive at least one hour of training

Types of Employees Who Will Need Training

It is important to note, that the definition of ’employee’ is very expansive and includes: standard W2 employees, AND part-time workers, contract workers, or seasonal workers.

For seasonal or short-duration workers, they must be trained within 30 calendar days or 100 hours worked, whichever comes first.
