Illinois Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

The Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) released a model Sexual Harassment Prevention Training program for Illinois employers. The purpose of this program is to train employees on handling and preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.

Which Employees Need to be Trained and When?

According to the Illinois Public Act 101-0221, employers are required to train all employees specifically on sexual harassment. This includes all supervisory and non-supervisory employees as well as short-term employees, part-time employees, and interns. It is recommended that contractors be trained as well but it is not required.

Employees must go through initial training within 6 months their employment and yearly thereafter. New supervisors must also go through this training within 6 months of their new assignment.

Supervisory employees must receive 2 hours of training and non-supervisory employees must receive 1 hour of training. In addition, 1 hour of bystander training is required for all employees. The training must meet or exceed the standards as set forth in Section 2-109(B) of the Illinois Human Rights Act. Restaurants and bars will need to provide supplemental training in accordance with Section 2-110 of the IHRA.
