Who Needs Medical Clearances?
A medical clearance, pertaining to respirator use, involves a Physician or Other Licensed Health Care Professional (PLHCP) certifying that an employee is physically able to wear a respirator without it causing an additional hazard to the employee. Since wearing a respirator may place a physiological burden on an employee depending on the type of respirator worn, workplace conditions, and the medical status of an employee, they must be medically cleared first.
OSHA Medical Evaluation Requirements
OSHA’s medical evaluation or questionnaire seeks to identify medical conditions that could potentially put a worker at risk when wearing a respirator. The evaluation takes into consideration an employee’s health, type of respirator, and the workplace conditions that it will be used in. Before the evaluation can be conducted, an employer must provide the PLHCP with information such as:
- The type of respirator that will be used;
- How long the respirator will be used at a given time;
- How much effort will be exerted by the employee wearing the respirator for the task which it is required; and
- The condition of the environment in which the work will be performed, and any additional clothing/protective equipment that will be used along with the respirator.
