Fire Prevention Week is October 8-14, 2023

It was one hundred years ago that the National Fire Prevention Association, NFPA, celebrated the first Fire Prevention Week! The theme this year is Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.

Fire safety education and planning is not just for school children. We have all seen fire escape routes posted in offices schools, our place of employment, and other public buildings.

But have you ever stopped and really studied the routes out of the building in the event of a fire? Is there a plan for the elderly or those with limited mobility? How about visitors who may be unfamiliar with the building? Don’t forget about any pets as well.

What Does OSHA Require for Fire Safety?

OSHA requires an Emergency Action Plan for all work locations, no matter the type. Make sure that an assembly point is established and that everyone is aware of where it is, and how to get there. Assign someone to take role of all employees, and NEVER leave the area until everyone is accounted for. Maintain a visitor sign-in log so you can account for everyone who may be in your place of business.

Now is a great time to create your fire escape plan, and conduct a drill both at work and at home.
