What Would You Do?

Most people know that an active shooter is a person who appears to be actively engaged in harming or attempting to kill people in a facility. Active shooter events have been happening more frequently and can happen anywhere, at any time. The actions taken by you can mean life or death for anyone involved. There are three lines of defense that can help should you ever find yourself in this situation.

RUN.

If possible, running or escaping from the scene is the best option. Take a moment to encourage others to retreat and evacuate with you but it is crucial to not let them slow you down with indecision.

HIDE.

If you are unable to run, hiding is the next line of defense. If you can lock or blockade the door, do so. You will want to hide behind large objects to remove yourself from plain sight of the shooter. You should also silence your cell phone and remain very quiet.

FIGHT.

This should only be done as a last resort and it is imperative to commit to your actions. Attempt to incapacitate the shooter and act with aggression by grabbing anything around you that can be used as a weapon to help take the shooter down.

What You Can Do To Prepare Today

Preparation is the most helpful thing you can do to minimize the effects of an active shooter situation. Your company’s plan does not have to be extensive. Typically, the simpler the plan, the more effective.

Once law enforcement arrives it is important to remain calm and keep your hands visible at all times. Know that help for the injured is on the way. Communicate as much information as possible to emergency personnel without pointing and yelling which can cause a commotion and draw notice.  Follow instructions and show compliance with all of law enforcement’s directions.
